This is a comprehensive course with over 20 hours of lessons covering the fundamentals of composing and designing with shapes, values, color, edges and texture through studying the masters and plein air painting.
In this course taught by Mike Hernandez and Tiffanie Mang, you will learn how to plan the overall design of your painting through matrix studies and free yourself from being tied to every detail in a photo. You will also learn how films use color to shape emotion and mood --- and how to bring that same power into your paintings. Mike will demonstrate how to use the gamut mask tool to design unique, harmonious palettes and apply that in a digital and gouache painting.

The Essentials of Painting Guided Track is a 4 month program that combines the flexibility of the Essentials of Painting on demand course with LIVE monthly sessions where Tiffanie provides paint overs and feedback to students. Students watch lessons and do the homework on their own time, and class meets online 4 times, once a month.

My color scripting mentorship is a 12 week course aimed to train students to use lighting and color cinematically to create impactful color keys for animation. Students will learn how to push mood and storytelling through light, master the color key workflow, and build the skills needed to succeed as professional color key artists. Classes will meet weekly in live zoom sessions.
Next Term: Sep 24th- Dec 10th 2026
Applicants will be selected based on portfolio review. Chosen applicants will be notified by August 10, 2026.
